2024 CAPS Trip: A Journey of Learning and Cultural Discovery
The CAPS trip was a rich, meaningful, and enjoyable experience for the staff and students from MCC who attended. We went to CAPS (Christian Aboriginal Parent Directed Schools) in Coolgardie, where students interacted with Indigenous boarders from WA, NT, and Qld.
They shared meals and participated in team games, mountain biking, painting projects, and basketball. The students formed friendships and better understood Aboriginal culture and people groups. Our MCC students cheered on the CAPS basketball team at the Kalgoorlie Arena. They visited the historic Hannah Mine Museum to learn about the impact of the gold rush on the Kalgoorlie region.
A real highlight was when the team headed out to the bush with the Brownley family. The Brownleys cooked damper and kangaroo tail for the whole group to experience. They shared Dreamtime stories and discussed the positive impact of the Christian faith on their Wongatha people. It was also sobering to learn about the challenges the family faced during the era of the Stolen Generations.
One of our students wrote: “We got to experience Aboriginal culture in person and learn more about them as people. I also loved getting to know the CAPS students and their origins. I even made a few friends, and I’m excited to hopefully see them again next year.”
